Is “mental” health an oxymoron? Is it possible to “get a grip on yourself” and “chill out”? If exploring questions like these is important (yes, it is) then making art that imagines symptoms of distress impacting day-to-day functioning and relationships is critical in working toward answers to the questions posed.
“From Inside The Abattoir” positions a “person” of vague gender, suggested by a computer generated voice and mannequin body, in an environment which reveals the remains of a once champion swimmer, i.e. a metaphor for the disintegration of robust youth yielding to old age and depression. This art demands that our culture address, in a comprehensive way, issues of aging and related mental conditions.
